On December 1, 1958, a fire broke out just before school let out at Our Lady of Angels Catholic School in the west Humboldt Park neighborhood. There was a delay in sounding the fire alarm and 1,600 children and nuns were trapped in the school. Ninety two children and two nuns died in the fire.

Jim and Bonnie have gotten involved with the renovation process, and invite wigiv to join them. From their fundraising website:
Mission of Our Lady of the Angels exists to provide material and spiritual support to the West Humboldt Park, Chicago- one of the most challenged neighborhoods in the United States. The Mission feeds about 1000 families a month, provides additional material and pastoral support to families, youth, and senior citizens, and, most importantly, brings the love of Christ to a neighborhood desperately in need of hope.
Our Lady of Angels has a very large project that will be going on for about a year. This year, while the “out of towners” are in the area for the picnic, wigiv will be doing a service project with them. They are very organized, and rest assured there will be work to do when you arrive!
Details:
- Friday, July 26, 2019, 9am -2pm. We’ll all go out after for lunch after, and maybe another group activity.
- The project for the day will be to hang drywall (mostly) and framing walls
- Bring your tools along if you have them:

- Box cutter (the kind with the retractable razor blades)
- Long, steel rulers – T-square, L-shaped, or long, straight steel rule
- Drill – electric or battery
- Level – long, if you have one
- Hammer

- Be sure to mark your tools with your initials or name
